About
TC Energy is proposing developing, building and operating a pumped energy storage facility at the 4th Canadian Division Training military base in Meaford.
Over the coming years, Ontario’s electricity demand is expected to increase. As we transition away from fossil fuel generation, we need to work now to make sure our electricity infrastructure can handle that demand. Using water and gravity, this project is effectively a natural battery and a made-in-Meaford electricity solution for all of Ontario.
It’s an ideal way to help secure Ontario’s energy future. This critical energy project will give priority to local skilled workers, material suppliers and vendors, and enable a vibrant local economy.
The safe, state-of-the-art technology will enable Ontario to transition away from fossil fuel power generation, optimize the power grid and generate enough energy to power one million homes every day, all while protecting Georgian Bay and the local environment.

What’s in it for Meaford?
This made-in-Ontario project will provide a lasting local impact through employment, investments in local businesses and the community.
Benefits for our community:
An independent report done by the Canadian Centre of Economic Analysis (CANCEA) – read the summary or the full report here – outlined that the Ontario Pumped Storage Project would add 41,200 jobs, supporting major supply chains in Ontario, and be a big lift to rural communities.
Here’s the breakdown:
- Generates high quality jobs for Ontarians: According to the CANCEA report, the Project would generate 41,200 jobs. Of those, over the four-year peak construction period, the Project would create 1,700 direct and indirect construction jobs annually.
- A Made-in-Ontario Project built by provincial and national supply chains: Of the total capital investment, 83% remains in Canada of which 92% stays in Ontario. This ensures that Canadian and Ontarian individuals and businesses are put first, with over 110,000 Ontarians benefiting throughout the Project’s lifetime.
- Investing in Meaford: Working closely with local government and community organizations, we are investing in opportunities that focus on local needs through local partnerships and initiatives that will enhance the long-term quality of life in Meaford.
- Contributes to the prosperity of rural economies: Over 20,000 rural households will benefit from the Project. Of the total employment and GDP benefits, 61% and 65%, respectively, will occur in rural parts of the province.
